Search your home and the immediate area
Start close. Many missing pets are hiding nearby, especially in the first minutes after an escape. Check inside your home, under beds, inside closets, behind appliances, in basements, garages, sheds, vehicles, window wells, under decks, and in thick shrubs.
Ask neighbors for permission to check yards, porches, sheds, garages, and crawl spaces. Move calmly and quietly. Bring a flashlight even during the day so you can catch eye reflection in dark spaces.
Leave a worn piece of clothing, your pet's bed, or a familiar blanket near the escape point. Familiar scent can help a frightened pet circle back.
