The core principle
Breed can provide useful context about physical capacity, historical function, and broad behavioral tendencies. It cannot reliably predict what a particular dog will do while lost. Fear, the cause of escape, training, health, age, weather, terrain, prior experience, and human response may matter as much as—or more than—breed.

Static data extracts may support research and consistency checks, but current public claims should be verified against the underlying authoritative source before a substantive update is published.
How recovery signals are developed
TailTracker begins with a breed’s documented purpose and functional history, then considers the traits required to perform that work. Those traits are translated into cautious recovery hypotheses—for example, scent-hound work may support stronger scent-led movement, while livestock-guardian work may support more independent perimeter movement and greater stand-off behavior.
What a 1–10 score means
The scores are comparative, ordinal planning signals. A score of 8 is higher than a score of 4 within the TailTracker directory; it does not mean an 80% probability, a validated travel distance, or a forecast for an individual dog. Scores should guide questions and search priorities—not replace sightings, case facts, or professional judgment.
Editorial controls and limitations
TailTracker applies the following controls when developing or revising a guide:
- Prefer primary standards, institutional sources, and peer-reviewed research over general-reference or commercial summaries.
- Use original wording and distinguish established facts from inference.
- Avoid absolute claims about travel distance, capture behavior, timing, or recovery success unless directly supported by suitable evidence.
- Reduce confidence when evidence is indirect, conflicting, dated, or not specific to missing dogs.
- Treat mixed-breed and individual-dog guidance as especially uncertain when ancestry, early experience, or current behavior is unknown.
- Revise models as stronger research and structured TailTracker outcome data become available.
